Description
Ths figure rests his weight on his r. leg placing his relaxed l. leg forward in an awkward pose. His r. arm is held akimbo with his hand on his hip. The index and middle fingers of his r. hand extend forward over his hip, while the other two fingers are bent back. He rests his l. forearm on top of the herm. A himation covers his l. arm and shoulder, wrapping across his back to his r. hip. From here, the garment is pulled in bunched, diagonal folds across his legs and over his l. forearm. Thus arranged, the himation falls to his knees leaving his torso, paunchy stomach, and lower legs bare. His head turns downward to his l. Long tufts of hair surround the face and also make up the mustache and the beard. A strongly furrowed forehead and sharply arched eyebrows characterize the face. The herm is decorated with a bearded head, a phallus, and side struts. The figurine possibly represents Papposilenos. No exact parallel is known. Closely related figurines, in which the himation falls, however, all the way to the feet, have been found at Gravisca, Veii, and Lipari.
Comments
