Description |
The short flaring foot supports a tall, ovoid body, expansive shoulder and high, tapering neck. Two large strap handles spring from the base of the shoulder and attach on the wide rim. Decoration consists of a row of relief tongues each positioned above a small boss at the base of the shoulder. Truncated pairs of this motif appear also at the base of each handle. The belly is simply ornamented with three parallel mouldings; similar torus mouldings decorate the base and midpoint of the neck. A large boss originally occupied the midpoint of each side of the rim. The major decorative device of this amphora is the pair of female-head reliefs rising above the attachment of each handle. |
