Description |
Olpe has a disk base, and an ovoid body with its greatest diameter below its midpoint. At the top of the body is a raised half round, above which a vertical neck rises to an outturned lip. A vertical strap handle made up of two coils of clay, round in section, rises from the upper body to the lip, where it is framed to either side by applied rotelle. The lip has three applied circles of clay on its top framing the top of the handle.
The edge of the base and the lower body have glaze. The body has four stacked friezes of animals moving left seperated by stripes. Bottommost: snake. Second (moving from the handle): winged panther, goat, griffin, goat. Third: griffin, tree, winged panther, goat, panther. Uppermost: water bird, griffin, winged panther. The fields of the upper three are filled with blob rosettes and rough vegetation. The animals are quite elongated, with fanciful incision. The neck and the top of the lip have glaze. |
